24 Nov 2024

Abstract

On November 19, the "Root, Branch, Rhythm" Miao Embroidery Digital Media Art Exhibition, organized by the Computational Media and Arts (CMA) Thrust at the Information Hub of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) and co-hosted by the Residential Colleges and the Youth League Committee, made a stunning debut. The exhibition, themed "Root, Branch, Rhythm," showcases the cultural heritage and innovative development of Miao embroidery through the cross-disciplinary integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern digital technology. Artists, scholars, and industry representatives from across the country gathered to explore the deep fusion of cultural heritage and digital media art.

In this exhibition, we created a guided tour video for Ms. Liping Shi using volumetric video technology. By integrating the digital avatar of Ms. Shi produced in the laboratory with a virtual Miao Embroidery studio, we comprehensively captured her movements, expressions, and voice, authentically recreating her process of explaining Miao Embroidery techniques. In the future, we hope this technology will not only present the three-dimensional image of the inheritor but also allow viewers to watch from any angle, as if they were physically present, thereby enhancing the immersive and interactive experience of cultural dissemination.

Through this kind of project, we can not only preserve precious intangible cultural heritage content but also showcase the unique charm of Miao Embroidery to the public in an innovative way, offering new possibilities for the digital preservation and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. We also aim to promote the preservation and transmission of more intangible cultural heritage through digital technology.
